Distilled at Caroni in January 2000, matured for 12 years in Trinidad and bottled in March 2012, this is one of the defining early Velier Caroni releases.
It was produced from molasses and aged entirely in the tropical climate before being bottled at 100 proof, equivalent to 50% ABV. Velier records a production run of 23,296 bottles.
Although the release was larger than later single-cask Caroni bottlings, its importance is historical. It came from the final era of production at a distillery that closed shortly afterwards, and it helped introduce drinkers to Caroni as a named distillery rather than merely a component used in blends.
The style is unmistakably heavy: dark molasses, smoke, oils, tarry notes, oak and a long, powerful finish. This was never intended to be a soft or sweet sipping rum. It is a robust example of the industrial Trinidad style that made Caroni famous among enthusiasts.
Now long discontinued, this bottle represents an important stage in the modern rediscovery of Caroni.
